Swimming in Ik Kil

Unlike the Sacred Cenote, swimming is highly encouraged at Ik Kil. The water is about 40-50 meters (130-160 feet) deep, so life jackets are mandatory for all swimmers. There is a carved stone staircase that takes you down to the water platform, and a diving platform for those seeking a thrill.

Pro Tips for Your Visit:

  • Go Early: To avoid the massive tour bus crowds, arrive as soon as they open at 8:00 AM.
  • Shower First: You must take a shower before entering the water to remove sunscreen and chemicals (protecting the ecosystem).
  • Eco-Sunscreen: Only biodegradable sunscreen is allowed. Better yet, skip the sunscreen until after your swim.

Photography Tips

The best angle for photography is from the top, looking down into the cenote to capture the vines trailing into the water. For underwater shots, a GoPro or waterproof phone case is essential. Note that professional tripod use may require a separate permit.
